Reflections on the Christian Practices

from the students of Messmer High School

2006-2007 School Year

Messmer High School is using “Way to Live” in their “Business and Leadership Class,” and their comments reflect that combination of business leadership, as well as reflection on life lessons and Christian Practices. Here are their comments:

When we started reading the “Way to Live” book, I took quotes and used them in my very day life.  I am really learning the value of a dollar. I think other schools need this business and leadership class.  Because the kids will get an understanding of how to make money and become a leader at the same time. This class helped my understand why the jobs are going overseas. It also helped me because when I own my own business and I come upon a bad situation, I will know how to be an honest leader.

I learned that the US Dollar isn’t always the most valuable in all countries. I also learned how to greet a professional business man or woman. I’m learning to be a leader. 

I think “Way to Live” played an important role in my life. It’s showing me how to be a better leader for myself. I think it would play a good role for any high school student. This book shows things in a whole different way. It shows me how to think differently.

I like “Way to Live” because it has examples of real problems that people have, and how they overcame those problems. It really has helped me out with some every day decisions.  This class prepares us for real life. When we leave the protection and comfort of our homes to face reality, that is life!

Overall, this book is a big help to our class. It offers many perspectives on everyday experiences.  I have learned ways to look at situations that I never thought of before. I like what I have experienced so far.

I think this class is helpful to all students who choose to take advantage of it.

The “Way to Live” book has influenced my life a lot. It gave me much advice on how to deal with problems and be a well-rounded person, and how to be more self-evident in the community.

I feel that this leadership class has given me more insight to what it takes to be a good leader. This class allows us to bring our own leadership techniques and  incorporate them with the new skills we learn. Other schools would benefit from a class like this one because business is universal, and it would help to make a lot of business leaders more open to new types of leading.

I think this book, Way to Live, is a great guide for young leaders. It’s a great reminder and reinforcement for experienced leaders. Leadership is such a vague term. It’s clearly and appropriately summed up in the “Way to Live.”

I think the book, way to live, is a good way to apply Christian living to every day life, which is very beneficial.  Because of this, I believe that this class is very valuable to the curriculum.  Also, it would benefit a lot of private Christian schools to have a class because it teachers the students to apply the lessons we learn to every day life, like helping younger children learn about the importance of eating a healthy breakfast. So I do believe those who take this class learn a lot from it.

I think this class is a really good opportunity for students. The “Way to Live” books are helpful with things in my every day life. I especially like how we can do community service and have the chance at gaining internships through the guest speakers who come to class.  I fell that other schools should consider having this class because to learn ways to interact with people on a professional level.

The leadership class is a good way to get to know important people and companies.  Getting to know people at these companies on a personal basis instead of through advertisements really gets an individual involved.  It also gives high school students a chance to get an internship. It’s getting to know connections, so get “connected.”

I believe this class is very beneficial.  Being a student in this class opens me up for a lot of opportunities. Way to Live is a very good book. It gives you an outlook on Christian life. That plus the information we receive in this class on being successful will help us in the real world.  The many speakers that we listen to give us a chance to seriously think about what we want to be in our future. We also have opportunities for internships.

I feel other schools should give this opportunity to their students. Because of this class, we are learning things that we will carry with us to college and the professional world.

This class would benefit other high schools because it teaches about leadership, professional attitudes, how to be knowledgeable about different aspects of business.  This class has taught me a lot about economics, and working with other countries. It’s preparing us for the real world, such as working with corporations or running a large business. But it also teachers skills from a Christian perspective.  We also learn about poverty in different parts of the world. I like the opportunities we have to listen to different speakers teach us about their occupation and the things we can do as we begin working in our future.

Leadership class has prepared me to communicate with people outside of myself and peers.  It also fosters skills and values to serve others because that’s what leadership is about – serving the community where you live. In studying leadership, I feel it follws the ideal to live what you learn, because the books, discussion, and work studies allow you to apply these skills in every day experiences. One thing I remember about this class was a metaphor about a boat. What’s above the boat you relate back to yourself, as what people see externally (gifts and talents like mathematical skills, communication, mobility). But things that are below the water you find the foundation of the boat which keeps it from toppling over (your personality and experiences).

Way to Live is a great guide of teaching youth a great Christian way of living. For example, the book gives proper examples of how to react with personal or social justice issues.  I personally believe that this program and book should be offered to all schools, moving beyond just catholic schools, because it surely gives guidance for all human beings.

Basically, this book, Way to Live, is about learning the right way to live our lives as Christians.  It is filled with different chapters about things that typical teenagers do in their everyday lives.  It is also filled with quotes and Scriptures that help us understand our mission to become better people. I normally don’t like reading because the books I have to read are not interesting. But this one is pretty good.
