A class from St. Joan Antida High School in Milwaukee spent some time with Lawton Merrit, reading one of his “Lil Johnnie” stories in the “Building Blocks for Hope” format. Here are their comments:
In my opinion, this was a great story. I could learn more about what other people think. I also liked that the story was short, and had questions that make you think.
:
The story, Randy and Richard would open up people and show them that this is really happening in life. It’s not just a story. That even little kids are starting to do things that are stupid.
Lil Johnnie is good. It helps people open their eyes to poverty in the ‘hood. And how kids live.
These stories are good for teens because they show the real life of today. Some teens try to do things that seem OK to them, but in real life, they don’t realize the danger. I want all teens to open their eyes and look at what is around them. They must get out of problem situations and do well in school and life.
Lil Johnnie was good. It’s better than reading about some little white girl getting kidnapped. These are true events that happen in our real lives. Maybe not exactly, but in similar ways.
I thought this chapter was good because it was a real story. It made me think about how kids’ lives would be if they kept selling drugs. And how other people can have influence on them. It just made me want to keep reading the story! It’s really interesting and it’s the reality of what kids and teenagers are doing today.
I think this is good for people because this is real life. These are issues and situations that happen to people everyday. We can learn from this. We can learn from these mistakes, make a change in our lives, and start a new path.
This is a good method of getting to people to read books because some stories can be related to your own life. You can even put yourself into these situations and actually learn from their mistakes.
I think this book seems really interesting. Especially because I like reading something that’s real.
If someone put this book, “Lil Johnnie off the Block” in front of me, then I would read it, and try to get others to read it. If I were a teacher, I would allow this book in schools because it could really help kids out there doing wrong things. It might make them turn their lives around. I think it teaches life-long lessons.
I think this is a good strategy because it’s teaching others about meaning. It’s showing that there’s hope for others.
I think that this is a good way to get readers’ attention.
I think that people could relate to this story, and therefore, look at the story as advice to see what things are right and wrong.
I love the format of the stories.
It’s not overwhelming for the reluctant reader.
The language of the story was good, and got the point across without being vulgar. It challenges students to higher level thinking skills; they have to answer more than “yes” or “no.” The layout is unique, which makes it a “stand out product.” As a teacher in the inner city,
I know that this is what my students want to read.
