David Chang was a person dedicated to the art of service. In fact, he saw all of life as art and service. He was a gifted individual, full of imagination and spirit. In college, he studied fine arts and psychology; he later went to art school for graphic design and illustration. He started his own commercial arts company with a friend.
His search to serve eventually led him to explore a call to ordained ministry. He studied at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, MD. For those four years, the seminary was filled with unusual banners, artistic Advent and Christmas greetings, innovative Lent and Easter environments, and whatever else the Spirit would move David to create. He was able to stretch religious imagination to far-reaching
boundaries and form new images for faith and worship, always with a focus on service. In 1994, he was going to be ordained to the priesthood the weekend following Thanksgiving. But David died
from liver cancer on November 11. He was 37 years old.
It is our hope that this scholarship, given in honor and memory of David Chang, will inspire all of us to live lives dedicated to the art of service.
Every year, an anonymous donor presents a “life scholarhip” of $500 to a graduating Teen Leader who has been a role model for others in his or her dedication to service.
