House of Peace Teen Leaders

Tomorrow’s Present programming is based on Dr. Calderone-Stewart’s doctoral research, completed in 2002, which identified five important factors that encourages young people to want to be leaders. When a school, church or any youth serving organization operates intentionally with these five characteristics, youth have the opportunity to grow their leadership capacity with integrity and purpose.

House of Peace Teen Leader program embodies this research and is the backbone of Tomorrow’s Present. This program is a partnership with the House of Peace and gives young people access to high quality leadership training in which they learn valuable leadership and peacemaking skills.

Twelve members of the team receive a scholarship to a Catholic High School. This team of freshman through seniors lead our two peacemaking workshops: “Pebbles of Peace Outweighing Boulders of Violence” and “Hope Is Something You Do.”

Currently, we have 16 Teen Leaders; students from different high schools all over Milwaukee who meet once a week for leadership training. This year, they will be leading small groups and doing larger group presentations at the following events:

Who are the Teen Leaders?

Teen Scholars
Scholars receive assistance from the House of Peace toward school tuition at the Milwaukee Catholic high school of their choice. They have a grade point average requirement, as well as a service component beyond their hours at the House of Peace.

Support Teens
Support Teens do not receive scholarship assistance toward a Catholic high school tuition. Either they attend public school, or they are on a waiting list for a scholarship.

Reflections on Being a Teen Leader

“This program has impacted my life in ways I never thought it would. I came in as a shy, hesitant freshman that was afraid to speak up. I am leaving as an outspoken, confident leader demanding change in our world.”

House of Peace Teen Leader"Being a Teen Leader at the House of Peace has made a difference in my life. I get the chance to work with a great group of teenagers who are dedicated to the program. They come from different backgrounds and have different lives, but everyone is treated with hospitality. They challenge me to take responsibility in my life."

House of Peace Teen Leader"Being a House of Peace teen leader has been a wonderful experience for me. I have been very blessed to learn how to peacefully and effectively resolve conflicts in my life. At times, I can be a very passive person, but I have learned how to clearly convey my feelings and listen well – even to a person I am in conflict with. It has helped me to communicate more effectively. I have had the privilege of learning from our adult leaders who have taught and coached us each month.
