“Pebbles” is an excellent program. Each year, we focus on some aspect of violence in the Milwaukee area. That way, we get to learn about a situation that exists in our city.
Last year, we looked at poverty and distributive justice. This year, we looked at racism.
We hold a youth forum for over 100 youth, we talk about the issue, and then we plan projects to address the issue. Then we have a reunion and an open house to talk about what we did and what we learned. By planning the forum, and doing the projects, young people learn new skills on how to handle tough situations. It makes you realize how important leadership is, and how necessary peacemaking skills are. Without peacemakers in leadership roles, our society would consist of nothing but violence and fear.
In our world today, there are so many hateful and violent crimes being committed. Most of the time, this is due to lack of imagination and a lack of communication. “Pebbles” gives us the opportunity to address the issues related to violence. As Teen Leaders we are able to educate other youth on peacemaking skills and problem solving and are therefore able to break the vicious cycle of violence in our community.
The House of Peace has been very inspiring to me. I truly know that I can make a difference if I try. “Pebbles of Peace outweighing Boulders of Violence” means if we come together and make small steps, there can be big results. Pebbles really can outweigh boulders.
The Teen Leaders promote peace in a whole new way. Our workshops are visual. We do activities to bring about learning, rather than lecturing. There are no conflicts that can’t be solved with talking and listening.
