I based it on my experiences with teaching and with ministry at House of Peace. It is not a memoir; it is fiction. Most of the characters and many of the events and people are pure imagination. But it does spin out of my real life experiences, my love for House of Peace, and my commitment to youth leadership training in the central city.
I wanted to paint a picture of urban ministry that doesn’t evoke the response, “Oh, those poor people; they need so much help!” but instead the response, “Oh, those resourceful and hopeful and resilient people! We can learn so much from them!”
I would like to thank my pre-readers:Joan Feiereisen, Jacquie Gozdowiak, Brenda Rodriguez., Anne Erbe;
and my editing staff: Dan Mulhall, Jeanne Fehlauer.
My novel is printed and distributed by Lulu.com, a self-publishing company I would highly recommend. However, they do not provide marketing, so I need you to help us spread the word!

Here’s what the back cover says:
A little murder, a little romance, a few twists, an inner city setting, a plucky main character who doesn’t know how to give up, teenagers trying to make a difference, and hope for everyone who struggles to find meaning in senseless tragedy… Made to Write is about Nellie Massa, required to reflect on her life, resistant at first, who eventually realizes that writing -- and the mindfulness it demands -- is essential for thriving and celebrating, despite the world’s disappointments and contradictions.
Dr. Calderone-Stewart has authored 20 books and more than 50 articles.
