Dr. Calderone-Stewart featured in Holy Cross Magazine

The Spring 2010 issue of Holy Cross Magazine has this article on pages 28-29:

“Peace and Leadership: Focusing on the present, one courageous alumna builds a lasting legacy,” by Jim Stingl. The article is found at this link:

The article captures her love for Holy Cross and for the Jesuit values she learned there, but it wasn’t long enough to mention several Holy Cross stories included here, plus some pictures.

Lisa was the college mascot for three years. When the previous Holy Cross crusader graduated, and no one took his place, she decided to step up. She sewed her own purple jumper, with a white cross on the front and back. She held a shield that said, “HC” and a wooden sword her dad made. Her roommate Ann Marie Kitz (class of 1977) was a pom-pom girl.

She made a Holy Cross banner for the band to carry, as they marched from O’Kane to Fenton Field before each football game. Her brother Steve (class of 1981) was in the band.

She took acting for four semesters, and appeared in several college plays, including Orestes. She shared the stage with Ann Dowd, who went on to be a successful TV and movie actress.

During her junior year, Lisa joined the Holy Cross swim team. She came in LAST PLACE in EVERY RACE she ever swam, but she enjoyed swimming so much, she stuck with it. The team had 20 slots, and fewer than 20 team members.

When she was a senior, the only other senior on the team dropped out, making her the only swimmer eligible for the “Most Outstanding Senior on the Swim Team” award. She received a watch that says, “Holy Cross Crusaders.”

Eventually, because of her experience on the Holy Cross varsity swim team, she became a swim coach for a CAYSL (Central Alabama YMCA Swim League) team. To read more about her experiences coaching, and how empowering the leadership capacity of the teenage swimmers on the team led to their undefeated season and division championship in 1985, click here:

Lisa and her two brothers (Steve and Joe, standing below) were all students together at Holy Cross 1977-1978.  Her parents and her younger brother David came for a parents weekend and are pictured here.
